Welcome to the world son!

Hello everyone!

I'm not as articulate as my lovely wife when she posts entries into our blog, but I think I'll be able to handle this one on my own.

Our son, banana, decided to join our family 13 days early.

At 11:20 pm January 30, 2008...our son MALAKAI (KAI for short) ADRIAN ISMAEL dela Rosa blessed our family. He weighed in at 6 lbs 13 oz and measured at exactly 20".

I'm sure Krista would go into further detail about the labor, delivery, recovery, and post partem when she gets a chance, but I thought I'd tell everyone this great news myself.

We can't thank you enough for all the thoughts and prayers for our quest for baby dela Rosa.

I'm just excited that "the quest of parenting baby dela Rosa" begins. It's going to be weird not having to call him banana but I think Kai is a pretty darn good name.

p.s. Krista and baby Kai are doing well

untitled

I couldn't think of a good title for my post this week, thus the oxymoronic title. I think that's the right word. If not, oh well, that's what I'm going with.

No Thursday 13 today, just random ramblings from yours truly.

First of all, if you haven't gone there via my blog roll on the left, make sure you visit, bookmark and make lots of encouraging comments on Baby Jack's Blog. This little guy and his parents and sister need all the support and prayers they can get. He's already got a small army shouting down heaven's doors, but more is always better. I'm kind of emphatic about this because as far as I'm concerned there but for the grace of God go I.

Secondly, because I want good vibes from my pregnancy to be transmitted via the inter-web to both Baby Jack and anyone else who might be having a hard time, my own pregnancy is going really well. I feel about the size of a car and I waddle worse than a penguin, but baby banana is head-down, his heart is strong and we're counting down the days till we get to meet him. No offense to Alisha, but I hope I don't have to go through what she's just been through with her baby. I'll let her tell the story when she's ready, but let's just say I'm going to be VERY put out if I'm 12 days late and need to be induced. I have 10 days of work left and the day I start my mat leave, I'm gonna be climbing stairs, scrubbing floors, drinking chamomile and raspberry leaf tea like it's going out out style, getting acupunctured, and, well, trying a few other things that I won't share publicly. ;)

I know, I know, I shouldn't push it and most of those self-induction methods don't work anyway, but I'm still gonna try, gosh darn it.

We had a doctor's appointment yesterday and my doctor checked to see if the wicked stomach bug I had on the weekend (not fun! I thought I was done with the puking thing!) started dilating me yet. It hadn't, which I wasn't too disappointed about. I still have 4 weeks and 10 days of work left, so I'm not really looking to be THAT early.

Anyway, that's about all that's new on the pregnancy front for now. I'll maybe try to get some new pictures of the belly soon. I'm actually interested to see if I really am as big as I feel.

i think i can, i think i can

Okay, so 5 weeks, or 33 days left to go, give or take a week or two. Here's my list of 7 complaints and 6 happies:

1. My tailbone is aching from sitting all the time on crappy office chairs.

2. My legs feel like I've been climbing stairs four hours a day.

3. I'm tired all the time.

4. I can't breathe.

5. Baby may or may not be head-down, but he sure does like to get a reaction out of me by punching, pinching and kicking all the time.

6. Vergil finally got sick (I've been waiting for him to get sick since the end of November - he's been running on sheer adrenaline since then) and I'm worried I might get sick too.

7. I've been feeling kind of nauseous again. Not puking, just icky.

8. I get to meet this kid soon!

9. Only 15 days of work left!

10. I still sleep pretty well.

11. I get to go for fetal assessments soon.

12. I get to be a for real mom!

13. Vergil's dad is recovering really, really well.

There. That's a pretty decent, almost balanced list. I'm just about ready to want my body back, but the light at the end of this tunnel is getting a whole lot closer.

Now if you'll excuse me, banana is trampolining my bladder...

surreal

I didn't blog about this yesterday, but after reading Heather and Karla's interesting articles about their blogging experiences, I thought maybe I should take full advantage of this always-interesting medium.

Vergil's dad had triple bypass surgery yesterday. It was very successful - the surgeon said it couldn't have gone better - but it's left me feeling kind of...strange. Vergil's a little shell-shocked by the whole thing. I haven't actually seen his dad yet, so I can't really imagine what it's like to see your dad unconscious, full of tubes and hooked up to all sorts of machines. Can't imagine and don't really want to imagine, actually. I find that very large parts of me recoil from that kind of empathy. It hasn't always been that way. I imagine it has a lot to do with the fact that empathizing strikes a far deeper chord in me than it ever used to. The kind of chord that leaves you reverberating and shaken for days on end.

It's funny. I used to think I was okay with the idea of mortality. We all have to die at some point, right? So why stress out about it? It's weird how that mentality changes when death actually enters your life on a personal level. Suddenly death and dying are not so okay anymore. In spite of my deep faith in God, my belief in heaven and my belief that the people I love are destined for there, I'm not ready to let anyone go right now.

Since losing our first child, it kind of feels like now death knows our address and has come knocking (though not entering yet) one too many times: my Oma and her deep vein thrombosis that's not completely resolved yet, my Grandpa and his as of yet undiagnosed stomach/heart condition and now Vergil's dad... Mortality lurks a little too close to these situations and I don't like it.

And then there's the people for whom death has actually entered their lives. There are so many people I know, both friends and co-workers, who have lost parents and loved ones in the last few months.

I'm not sure if there really is a conspiracy out there, but it always seems like when I'm feeling the most vulnerable about death and the most worried about losing our baby, all I hear on the news and all of the articles I accidentally stumble across are about pregnant women being killed and babies dying. How do you stave off attacks like that? How do you avoid emotionally spiralling into a pit of anxiety and despair?

No, I shouldn't ask how, because I know how I'm dealing with it. I've already said I'm recoiling from empathy. Ah good old avoidance.

Anyway, that's what's on my mind today.

34 weeks down

6 or 8 weeks to go. Hopefully only 6. I'd really rather not go too far past my due date, especially since my parents are planning on coming in on the 18th of February. If baby's not born by then, I'll be very put out.

Speaking of being put out, I was a little miffed at baby banana yesterday. We had a doctor's appointment, and when she went to check his heartbeat, it seemed to take a good while to find it. I was not impressed. As a matter of fact, I was a little panicky about it. I kept watching my doctor's face to see what her reaction was. I couldn't stop myself from thinking - this is it. I'm not supposed to have this baby after all. After all of this, I'm still going to miscarry. Fortunately, this wasn't the case, and she did eventually find the heartbeat. Turns out baby had turned around and she had the monitor directly on his head. Now, I never took biology in high school, but I'm pretty sure there's no way you can hear a heartbeat through a skull.

It took me most of the rest of the morning to get over that feeling of panic, though, especially because baby was pretty quiet that morning. I told Vergil I felt like he owed me a good solid kick for making me worry like that, but I got nothing. Until I tried to sleep that night, of course. Then it was all jumping on the bed and rolling around like the little monkey I know him for.

I think that's only the second or third time since we first heard his heartbeat that I panicked like that. I know I'm in for a lifetime of worrying about this kid and I know I've already entrusted his life to God, but I just don't think I'm strong enough to let him go that completely if that's really what's going to be asked of me again. At this point, I'd really just like a chance to try my hand at this parenting thing.

Anyway, today he's bopping around like crazy, so that's good, as uncomfortable as it's making me feel. I'm trying to will him back into a head-down position so I don't have to deal with a breech baby, but we'll see how that goes. He was causing me some serious pelvic pain this morning, so I'm hoping that means he's gone ahead and turned over again already.

What else? Oh yes, we got our crib! My parents generously gave us some money to purchase a crib and mattress, so that's what we did during the day on New Year's Eve. Vergil and our friend Eugene set it up that night and I'm really quite happy with it. Here are some pictures:

Other than that, I have to admit I'm looking forward to being done work. I have three projects to finish that I've been dragging my heels on, but apart from that, I think I'm ready to pass on the torch to Eric.

Oh, and if you have a moment, slip on over to Alisha's blog and give her baby some encouragement to get himself outta there!

P.S. Hope everyone had a great Christmas and a very happy New Year!
